We just saw this snake in our back yard today. Please identify the snake and its characteristics. The snake just caught a frog and was having the morning breakfast.
That's quite a catch folk! Have you been able to figure out what that strawberry shaped red thing to the side of snake's mouth? Could they be the entrails of the frog? That's a gruesome thought!
It's an Eastern Gartner Snake - one of the most common snakes of New Jersey. It is non-venomous, btw. There are only two kinds of venomous snakes in New Jersey, and indeed the entire North East - and one of them's nearly extinct, and this is not either of them.

Here's where you can find more about it..
A google search on Eastern Garter Snake brings you a lot more sites on this topic:
I was wondering myself what the strawberry thing was myself. I thought it was just that - a strawberry :)
But entrails of a frog?? Are they that bright red? Don't answer that :)
