Shooting Star - John Hodgman

John Hodgman, a Yale graduate, became famous with his appearance on Daily Show (with Jon Stewart) to promote his book, 'The Areas of My Expertise'. He appears on the show frequently as 'Resident Expert', commenting on various topics. He also can be seen on recent Apple ad campaign.

I noticed that he really has some talent and tried to dig more material about him online. Surprisingly I came across his 'Podcasts', dubbed as 'Little Gray Books' lectures, I don't think he generates any new Podcasts, however, the ones out there are really funny and refreshing. I found 'How to Observe Presidents Day ' to be hilarious. I won't be surprised to see him, getting his own show on 'Comedy Central'

Janaganamana...

Can't think anyone who can take pride in killing innocent civilians. It's very easy to kill another human being, but it's very difficult to help another human being to live. I can never understand the mind set of people who commit the gruesome acts like today's bombings in Mumbai commuter train.

As tribute to all those who lost their loved ones, here is a video that bonds us together!

Mumbai - World's Rudest and New York - World's Most Polite ???

I read this Reader's Digest article, "How polite are we?", in the morning and by night all the networks are covering it as big news.

According to this Survey, Mumbai is rated as world's rudest city and New York is rated as world's most polite city. What's wrong with this picture?

I was surprised to see the criteria used to determine the being rude vs. being polite.

1. "Dropping papers in a busy street to see if anyone would help"
Cannot comment much on this, because I never been to Mumbai. However, this partly shows being people as busy, not rude.

2. "Checking how often shop assistants said “thank you”"
This, I have problem with. In country like India forget about busy city like Mumbai, even rural town shop assistant would not say "thank you". But, that's most definitely not because he/she was being rude. It's because ordinary people in India are simply not used to saying such pleasantries.

3. "Counting how often someone held a door open"
This is another area where the survey picked a wrong case to observe to analyze rudeness. Again, most of the ordinary people in India are not simply used to 'holding the door open for someone that's coming behind them'. People just do not such thing as being rude. I will give you an example.

For years I have been working and living in NY/NJ/PA tri-state area. Every time someone sneezes, most of them (including myself) say 'bless you' (short for 'may god bless you'). Some may choose to say it, some don't say it. I worked in Maryland for six months, there I observed my colleagues and not even once they said 'bless you'. I do not think they are any more impolite than the New Yorkers.

I think this survey is severely flawed!

Two moving monologues few days after 9/11

Jon Stewart handled himself great and gave a reaction that seemed to have gotten from his gut. However, I think David Letter who is the senior of the two, was excellent in putting things in perspective and eloquent in his speech. Every one of us can learn great deal by looking at how these two conducted themselves at not only difficult time in their own lives but also of the country.

David Letterman 9/11

Jon Stewart 9/11

Jon Stewart v Bill Bennett

jon stewart v. bill bennett

I watched this on the Daily Show and I thought that Jon Stewart did really well to counter the argument of well known ultra-conservative pundit, Bill Bennett. I especially liked his refutal of the slippery slope argument used by Bennett.

On the whole, an interesting debate about the gay marriage issue.

Indian Superhighway

I was completely in the dark about the India's new superhighway, Golden Quadrilateral.
I learned about it from a NYtimes article published during President Bush's visit to India, a month ago. This highway construction is still underway, when finished would connect New Delhi - Calcutta - Chennai - Mumbai - New Delhi.

Even though, there are obstacles to this massive project as anyone can expect, I am glad that Indian government is overcoming them; I think that new super highway will be built slowly, but surely.

India Accelerating, building a superhighway, a New York Times audio/visual article.

Private Satellites Do Exist

Hello Fellas,

Recently, Mr.Yogi and I discussed the possibility of having private satellites - apparently, unbeknownst to us (I mean Mr.Yogi and I), there are about 70 privately owned satellites orbiting the earth this very moment :)

BTW this topic came up in our discussion when we were discussing the possible implications of Google Earth.

Mr.Yogi pointed out a couple more neat sites as well: mars.google.com & moon.google.com

Ciao,
Voice of Reason

P.S. Here is an article explaining how the private Satellites lost their completely private status in the U.S.

"66% say Bush is India’s Friend"

Times of India conducted a number of polls regarding the Indian populace's opinion of America.

Though some of the questions are very manipulative and though I cannot vouch for the reliability of the newspaper's methods, even if the numbers are slightly representative of the true popular opinion - it is pretty shocking to say the least.

I was especially shocked about Bush's popularity rating in India - it was definitely not what I was expecting, although I am not sure what I was expecting. :)

As some observant soul pointed out, since Bush's popularity is higher in India (66%) than here in the U.S. (38%) , perhaps Bush should stay there ;)
