I was quite amazed to find out about the current U.S. policy on the use of nuclear weapons.
Personally, I completely agree with the petition. Even though the risk of the U.S. using nuclear weapons on a non-nuclear state is very low, this ensures that some overzealous President cannot declare all-out nuclear war on countries - just to ensure that no more lives are lost in the war.
The use of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki demonstrates that a President is more than capable of such ill judgement. What amazes me is not Truman 's decision to use Atomic Bombs but his decision to use TWO of them. One would think that the use of just a single bomb should suffice to demonstrate to the Japanese the capability of the U.S. to cause "prompt and utter destruction".
Really, this decision must take the prize for the most ill-considered and brazen decisions by a leader. The probable second being Hitler's decision to invade Russia - another mind-bogglingly stupid decision- but that's for another day.
What's your take on the whole issue?

The treaties are for general public; even if U.S. foreign policy states that ‘we do not attack non-nuclear states with nuclear weapons’, no one would take it that seriously. Because, when U.S. or any other nuclear state for that matter is attacked and it’s mere existence gets into jeopardy, then choosing a nuclear option would not be a difficult thing to do.
As far as U.S. striking at Japan second time with nuclear weapon, has some genuine points to consider. First of all, I am not defending the second strike on Nagasaki.
1.Impacts of nuclear weapons are not widely known, because they were never used before.
2.There wasn’t enough time between the first strike and the second to come into grips with the devastation caused by a nuclear attack.
3.CNN & Fox weren’t there to give live telecast of the 1st strike on Hiroshima; not to poke fun at CNN/Fox, but I hope you got my drift.
You have to give credit to all the world leaders that got their hands near the nuclear trigger and didn’t find the need to use it. In my opinion U.S. is not afraid of any country, but it’s rather afraid of entities that don’t belong to any country/state.
